Level 1 Top Users: Celebrating 1 year of free access and testing

In 2024, we opened NeuroAscent’s first three free levels to test our educational gaming platform. The calvarium level serves as the gateway to skull anatomy, guiding users through the bones and sutures that protect the brain.

222 users collectively tackled 4,721 questions about calvarium anatomy, maintaining a 71.51% accuracy rate while averaging 6.96 seconds per response. That’s a lot of skull bones. Be sure to read our recent post on the growth of our project over the years.

Calvarium Content

The calvarium level covers 34 anatomical structures commonly tested in medical school exams, with 151 questions spread across four difficulty tiers: 32 entry-level, 73 intermediate, 39 advanced, and 7 expert-level.

Beyond basic identification, the questions cover anatomical relationships (80), physiology (17), and clinical applications (18). Making these levels free in 2024 helped us improve both the framework and the content.

Level 1: the calvarium of the human skull. The roof of the cranial vault is composed of flat diploic bones. It serves as a protective cover for the cerebrum and cerebellum. In this level, users learned about the intramembranous ossification process that forms these bones and how they gradually fuse along suture lines as we develop.

Level 1: Top Users in the Past Year

Here’s how our top users performed across both timed and flashcard modes. anyamalhotra answered 323 questions at 88.85% accuracy, earning 3,552 points. Snowlouette hit 93.25% accuracy across 311 questions. Lils24 averaged just 4.95 seconds per question across 200 attempts. m.brigger03 and Faithful each completed over 180 questions with accuracy rates above 75%. All five have earned extended access to the full set of skull levels.

Our timed mode gives users 90 seconds to answer as many questions as possible, with an algorithm that adapts question selection to each player’s difficulty setting. m.brigger03 leads the timed leaderboard with 317 points at 88% accuracy. ineedmedicine and StudentofSON followed at 76.19% and 81.25% accuracy, with Loki and varundvd rounding out the top five.

Selecting a higher difficulty opens up harder questions sooner in gameplay, which means more points per correct answer.

New CNS Surface Anatomy: Coming Soon

Next up: surface anatomy of the lateral cortex and brainstem. Three new levels, over 190 anatomical structures, and 493 questions. These cover content that shows up heavily on board exams and in clinical rotations.

Our top performers have received early access to these new levels. For free-tier users, full access is available through subscription. Thanks to everyone who’s played, reported bugs, and given feedback. We look forward to what’s next.

Three new levels of cortical and brainstem surface anatomy are now available to subscription users. We have also awarded free access to the champion users above who provided great feedback!
